Eagles soar high, Red Cubs roar in Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines -- The Ateneo-A Blue Eagles and the San Beda-A Red Cubs swamped their rivals in the ongoing 19th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium.
                  
Von Pessumal and Kiefer Ravena made 22 and 17 points as they led the Blue Eagles to a 77-70 beating of St. Claire in Group A of the senior division.

Arvin Tolentino and Javee Mocon, meanwhile, topscored with 14 and 13 points in leading the Red Cubs to an 83-71 demolition of the Fatima University Junior Phoenix in the junior action.

The Blue Eagles, with rookie Jerie Pingoy back in action who wound up with four points, and the Red Cubs both posted their second straight wins and are now ahead in their respective brackets.

In other games, Cedrick Ablaza made 19 points for the Informatics Icons, who won over PATTS College of Aeronautics, 86-67, for their first triumph in Group B.

San Beda-B blasted Emilio Aguinaldo College High School, 72-59, for their second win in another junior match.

Pessumal banged in 11 points in the fourth period, allowing the Blue Eagles to hold off St. Claire, which was down by nine, 42-51, at the end of the third.

Commissioner Robert de la Rosa said the top two teams in each bracket will be able to make it to the semifinals.
