MANILA, Philippines - International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia defeated Ryan Christian Magtabog to lead the premier boys’ 20-under division of the National Age-Group chess championships at the Taguig City auditorium in Taguig last Thursday.
Held to a draw by IM Haridas Pascua in the ninth round, Garcia bounced back against Magtabog to improve his tally to 16 points in the event that awards 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and zero for a loss.
In the girls’ Under-20, WFM Marie Antoinette San Diego downed WFM Janelle Mae Frayna to grab the lead with 16 points. San Diego earlier bowed to WFM Jan Jodilyn Fronda.
The other leaders are FM Paulo Bersamina (20 points, boys’ U-16); Daryl Unix Samantila and John Merill Jacutina, (14 points, boys’ U-14); Israelito Rilloraza, (17 points, boys’ U-12); Crisus Joshua Sarchez, (15 points, boys’ U-10); Nouri Alekhine and Michael Concio, (18 points, boys’ U-8);
Ella Grace Moulic, (13 points, girls’ U-16); Samantha Glo Revita, (13 points, girls’ U-14); Allanety Jia Doroy, (16 points, girls’ U-12); Checy Aliena Telesforo, (girls’ U-10; and Gerlin Mae San Diego, girls’ U-8).
The event is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and supported by Sen. Koko Pimentel, the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Department of Education and hosted by Taguig City government through the effort of Bayan Muna.
Winners will earn the right to represent the country in the ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships in Thailand and the Asian Youth Chess Championships in Iran.
