Ateneo-B rips national youth five in Fr. Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo-B Blue Eagles drew big baskets from the outside in the first half,  and  swamped the national youth team, 65-48, last Monday in the 19th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium.

Triples scored by the unheralded Kevin Gamboa and Joma Adornado helped the Blue Eagles post their second straight win in Group B.

The Blue Eagles move ahead of the Adamson Falcons and the University of the Philippines Maroons, who got 11 points from Julius Wong as they put away PATTS College of Aeronautics, 73-39.

In Group A, Cameroonian cager Ahmed Salihon shot 18 points for the Fatima University (1-1), as they turned back Jose Rizal University, 62-58, while Bobby Ray Parks Jr. banged in 19 points for the National University Bulldogs, who prevailed over Letran, 91-49.

Gamboa got the Blue Eagles off to a hot start with his two triples in the first period which allowed the Loyola dribblers to grab 18-6 advantage.

Joma, the son of PBA great William “Bogs” Adornado, shot 17 points for the Blue Eagles, scored two of his four treys in the second canto as they stayed ahead, 31-20, at halftime.

In the junior division, Ivan Villanueva made 15 points for the Letran Squires, who won over University of Santo Tomas, 92-51.

Adornado hit two more three-pointers in the third canto as Ateneo-B moved away by 17, 65-48, at the end of the third.
