Aguilar posts twin wins in Kopiko Supercross

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Glenn Aguilar bucked tough weather conditions to beat the stellar field and rule the two toughest categories of the Kopiko Astig 3-in-One Supercross Series in Basi City, Negros Oriental last Sunday.

Aguilar made a good start from the inner lane in the Pro Open (450cc) final then pulled away in the sixth lap as Dondon Yuson took a spill at the muddy Bais High School tracks.

Jonjon Adlawan snatched runner-up honors from Bornok Mangosong to improve on his third place finish in the same category in the first leg of the series in Cebu last January.

Earlier, Aguilar held off Mangosong to likewise prevail in the Pro Lites (250 cc) category. After another great start, Aguilar took the early lead over Mangosong. The two riders swapped the lead three times even after Mangosong lost his goggles in the seventh lap. But Aguilar overtook Mangosong in one of the last turns in the following lap to stay in the lead for good in the 23-lap race which drew a big crowd numbering around 40,000.

Aside from copping two more gold trophies, Aguilar, who also won two more trophies, thus surged ahead in the overall standings for the Rider of the Year Award, to be handed out at the end of the 12-leg series. Aguilar also finished in the top five in the initial races in Cebu where world No. 6 Nikolaj Larsen of Denmark and his team joined the event.

The Kopiko Astig 3-in-One stakes more than P500,000 in prizes in all 15 categories. Highlights from the Cebu and Bais races will be broadcast over Studio 23 on Sunday at 11 a.m. The next leg of the Kopiko Astig 3-in-One Supercross Series will be held in Bacolod City on April 6-7.
