MANILA, Philippines - John Paul Gomez crushed IM Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam to share third place with GM Mark Paragua and six others in the HD Bank Cup International Open chess tournament in Vietnam won by GM Le Quang Liem over the weekend.
Gomez outwitted Nguyen after 44 moves of a Queen’s Indian defense to finish tied with seven others with 6.5 points.
Paragua halved the point with GM Zhou Weiqi of China in 31 moves of a Queen’s Pawn Opening.
