Inter-scholastic invitational golf slated at Cangolf

MANILA, Philippines - A number of schools will be seeing action in the next two weekends starting tomorrow as they vie for attractive prizes and the right to be called the first-ever Inter-Scholastic Invitational champion of the National Golf Association of the Philippines.

Canlubang Golf and Country Club, the well-manicured traditional championship course south of Manila, will play host to the 72-hole event where such respected learning institutions as La Salle, Xavier and Lyceum are seeing action.

Teams will be made up of three to four players with each to field only three per day and the top two scores counting in the event presented by the MVP Sports Foundation as the NGAP keeps up with its advocacy of keeping the players in school while giving them an avenue to strut their wares.

“With the generous help of the MVPSF, the NGAP now has the means to encourge these players to stay in school and help them in their respective athletic programs,” NGAP president Tommy Manotoc said.

The event is the first of its kind in the country and it is made even more historic with the MVPSF offering P100,000 as a cash prize for the champion school’s athletic program that would help develop golf.

“We want our players to be given the opportunity to study in good and reputable schools while continuing to excel as golfers, that’s why the NGAP and the MVPSF are giving them this tournament.”

La Salle will be fielding three teams – Benilde, La Salle-Taft and La Salle-Greenhills – even as Lyceum looms as the early favorite with former junior wonder Wolen Superal and veteran campaigner Lawrence Celestino leading the charge.

Second place in the event included in the PLDT Group’s Amateur Golf Tour would be worth P50,000.
