FIBA Asia cites SBP recognition

MANILA, Philippines - Two high-ranking FIBA Asia officials yesterday congratulated the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas for being chosen one of 2012’s Best National Sports Associations by the Philippine Sportswriters Association.

FIBA Asia president Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani of Qatar and executive director Hagop Khajirian of Lebanon toasted SBP for the recognition it got from “an objective and important group like the media.”

In an email addressed to SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan and executive director Sonny Barrios, Khajirian said: “It is indeed heartening and exciting to note that a member National Federation has been recognized” as an overachieving NSA.

“More importantly, as a basketball fan, I am excited that a basketball organization has been accorded such a national honor,” said Khajirian, who played a key role in transferring hosting rights of the FIBA Asia Championship to the Philippines.

“Therefore, I not only congratulate you as a member of the FIBA Asia family, but also as a basketball fan,” he added.

Barrios, in response, expressed gratitude to the FIBA Asia executive for his “encouraging words.”

Said Barrios: “Under your leadership at FIBA Asia and your show of trust and confidence for SBP under the presidency of Mr. Pangilinan, we are inspired even more to do well as a basketball federation and as a member of good standing of FIBA Asia.”

Sheikh Saud gave special mention to the Filipinos’ love for the game.

“The passion for basketball in the Philippines is common knowledge,” he said. “And this award comes as a recognition for the National Federation for its effort in consolidating and promoting the popularity of basketball.

The PSA Awards will be held tonight at the historic Manila Hotel.
