PSC chief on whirlwind scouting trip

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia is traveling halfway across the globe in search of Fil-foreign athletes who can represent the country in major international competitions.

At the same time, Garcia will have the chance to renew the country’s sports development ties with Spain, Brazil, Argentina and the United States during his visit from March 18 to April 5.

“It can be a tiring trip but I’m looking forward to a productive one,” said Garcia, who will be accompanied in the trip by PSC executive director Guillermo Iroy.

On his itinerary are meetings with his foreign counterparts, the different Philippine ambassadors and members of the Filipino community.

Garcia will find every opportunity to discuss with them the possible sharing of sports programs, and the signing of agreements regarding the future hiring of foreign coaches.

Garcia said he’s looking at sending Filipino athletes to training camps or these countries sending coaches and trainers to the Philippines to conduct seminars and clinics.

First stop, according to Garcia, will be Madrid, then Brazil, Argentina and San Diego.

Garcia said the Philippines can learn a lot from Spain when it comes to tennis.

“They have (Rafael) Nadal. Of course football is also part of their lives so hopefully through this visit we can get them to send experts here to conduct talks or seminars to either athletes, coaches of trainers.

“This will be discussed plus the idea of Spanish Filipinos with talent who we can invite to join the Philippine team not only in football but in other sports,” said Garcia.

The PSC chief cited the Philippine Azkals who have acquired the services of Fil-Spanish players Juani and Angel Guirado for major competitions.

“In Brazil and Argentina, football is also popular. Volleyball is also one of their favorite sports. But most likely we will focus on the sending of experts here. We can pay for their board and lodging,” he added.
