NU tossers cop UAAP volley title over FEU
MANILA, Philippines - National University captured its first-ever UAAP men’s volleyball crown as the Bulldogs ended Far Eastern University’s reign with a 26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19 victory in yesterday’s sudden death at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Peter Torres scored the game-winning smash, ending the tight, thrilling four-set duel and heralding the Bulldogs’ rise as the new volley power.
The Bulldogs, who took the series’ opener but dropped the next to set up the winner-take-all match, thus won the league’s last championship and capped the school’s remarkable showing in the season. NU also reigned in men’s beach volleyball, men’s badminton and men’s lawn tennis to underscore its sound sports program.
Torres, a 6-foot-3 standout from Leyte National High School in Tacloban, scattered 13 attacks for a 15-point output. He was named the Finals MVP.
Down by eight early in the game and trailing 20-24, the Bulldogs took the opening frame, scoring six straight points capped by back-to-back aces by Edwin Tolentino.
