La Salle seeks UAAP net crown over UST
MANILA, Philippines - La Salle goes for a sweep of the UAAP women’s tennis crown as it plays embattled defending champion UST in Game Two of their best-of-three series today at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The Lady Archers hacked out a 3-2 win in the series’ opener last Tuesday and are raring to wrap it all up beginning at 9 a.m. and avenge the loss they suffered from the hands of the Tigresses last season.
“We just need one more win to win the championship. I just hope they’ll dish out the same performance they showed in the series’ opener,†said La Salle coach Roland Kraut, also the country’s non-playing team captain in the Davis Cup.
Reggie Santiago upended reigning MVP Macy Gonzales, 6-2, 6-2, in the first singles to set the tone for La Salle’s victory. Aside from Santiago, singles players Martina Guba and Marinel Rudas delivered the goods in Game 1 for the Lady Archers, who are gunning for their seventh crown overall.
Guba downed Len-len Santos, 6-3, 6-0, in the second singles, while Rudas, a veteran internationalist, beat Lenelyn Milo in the decider, 6-1, 6-0.
The Tigresses’ victories came from Diane Bautista and Jhie Helar, who beat Nikki Arandia and Princess Castillo, 7-5, 4-6, in the first doubles and Zaza Paulino and April Santos, who turned back Lynette Palasan and Aira Putiz, 6-0, 6-2.
