Shooting elections March 2

MANILA, Philippines - Mikee Romero, outgoing president of the Philippine National Shooting Association (PNSA), yesterday clarified that their elections will be held as scheduled on March 2 contrary to conflicting reports that it won’t push through.

“We have already abided with the procedure giving the Philippine Olympic Committee a 15-day notice for an election to take place,” said Romero in a statement. “The PNSA has to call the elections right away without delay as the term of the PNSA board of directors have all expired last Jan. 31, 2012. Officially, I am not the PNSA president anymore.”

Though he remains as a representative of the shotgun group, Romero reiterated his earlier announcement that he won’t be seeking another term due to his tight business schedule.

Romero took over the remainder of the four-year term left by Olympian Art Macapagal in June of 2011 after he was overwhelmingly voted by the directors of the five aggrupations – shotgun, rifle, pistol, practical shooting and non-ISSF.

While his allies are pushing him to seek a fresh four-year mandate, Romero remained firm in his decision, saying: “It’s time for others to lead the association. There are so many officers capable of heading the association.”

“I will be doing a disservice to the association if I will continue to cling on my position while I’m out most of the time,” said the 41-year-old owner of Harbour Centre who served the association for a little over 18 months.

The PNSA is now under the jurisdiction of the board-appointed Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

Romero has done enough for the association and its shooters by helping provide the installation of the first electronic target system at the Marine Shooting Range and the expanding of the PNSA members.

Likewise, Romero also gave their member shooters the exposure they needed after establishing a good working relationship with the POC and the Philippine Sports Commission.
