SBC XI, Perpetual netters cop crowns

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - San Beda College snapped a 10-year title drought in juniors football, while University of Perpetual Help System Dalta captured its first seniors lawn tennis crown in 16 years yesterday in NCAA Season 88 action.

Miguel Mendoza struck in extra time as the Red Cubs nipped Arellano University, 1-0, at the ASCOM Pitch in Taguig City.

The Chiefs held San Beda with their tough defense but crumbled when Mendoza converted the marginal goal in the 102nd minute for the Red Cubs.

San Beda completed an unbeaten season and ended CSB-La Salle Greenhills’ 10-year reign in the event hosted Jose Rizal University.

“All throughout the season, this is the result of our hard work,” said Red Cubs rookie coach Gerald Orcullo. â€œIt was a collective effort.”

San Beda’s Jerome Marzan took the MVP and Best Midfielder honors, while his teammate John Abraham was named the Best Defender.

In tennis, the Altas halted Letran’s four-year reign with a 2-0 victory at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Transferee Kim Saraza scored a 7-5, 6-1 over Adjuthur Moralde in the first singles and later joined forces with Russell Arcilla to beat the tandem of Moralde and Bryan Sarenas, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, in the doubles match for Perpetual Help to clinch the title.

Saraza was named the tournament MVP for the Altas, who won their third crown overall and the first since the 1996-97 season.
