Flawless Superal seals 15-pt victory

The Philippine Star

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines – Princess Superal capped her domination of the 50th Southern Ladies golf tournament with a flawless four-under 68 worth 58 points as she recorded a 15-point victory over Felicia Medalla and Harmie Constantino at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club here yesterday.

Superal, who went unassailably ahead by firing her first 58-point output in the second round Thursday, hit two birdies each on both nines and parred the rest to preserve a bogey-free round and assemble a 54-hole aggregate of 173 points under the Molave scoring system.

“I played pressure-free and had a trouble- free round,” said the 16-year-old mainstay of the ICTSI-The Country Club team, who needed to nip Sunshine Baraquiel in sudden death to capture last year’s overall crown in Cebu. “It’s nice to win again and it means so much since I won it again on its golden staging.”

Medalla of Wack Wack shot 55 points or one-under 71 in medal play for a 158 and edged Constantino of Camp Aguinaldo, who struggled with 51 points, in the countback to snatch the Championship Division crown. Apple Fudolin of Del Monte wound up third with 157 in the event sponsored by Philippine Sports Commission, WWWExpress, Security Bank, Hans Brumann Jeweler, DPC Yellow Pages, St. Luke’s Medical Center and Leisure and Resorts World Corp.

Sofia Chabon, one of the two new members of Team ICTSI-TCC, made it two-in-row for the squad by winning the Class A crown, also in convincing fashions, in the tournament backed by hole-in-one sponsors Toyota Vios and Mizuno. She carded a 52 for a 156, beating Del Monte’s Rainstar Roque, who also had a 52-151, by five points. Annika Cedo of Southwoods made a 47 for a 150 then nipped Lois Kaye Go of Cebu Country Club in the countback for third.

Violeta Pegels of Forest Hills took the Class B crown with a 124 after a 39, winning by four over Riviera’s Grace Montilla had 38 and a 120 while Caroline Go Jeun of Pueblo came in third with a 117 after a 37.

Mary Ang, also of Forest Hills, shot 37 points for a 106 and edged JM Balbuena of Davao, who had a 34-105, for the Class C title while Nitz Salivio of Aguinaldo bagged the Class D crown with a 96 after a 36, beating Josephine Vergara of Davao, who had 28-93, by three.

Pueblo’s Evelyn Roque took the seniors crown with 71 points, defeating Leni Cabili of Aguinaldo, who had a 69, by two while Pueblo’s Celine Menes wound up third with a 66.

Davao’s Balbuena, Josephine Vergara, Roselyn Sara and Lilibeth Crisolog, meanwhile, foiled ICTSI’s bid for a three-title sweep as it pooled a 249 to claim the team championship. The ICTSI bets, who included Sarah Ababa, Abby Arevalo, Superal and Chabon, settled for second with a 246 with Southwoods-Valley, composed of Marvi Monsalve, Daniella Uy, Cedo and Medalla, finishing third with a 243.
