Ilagan big loss to Phl dragon boat

MANILA, Philippines - Nestor Ilagan, director and head coach of the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation, passed away yesterday following a freak accident that took place during Thursday’s team practice along Manila Bay.

Ilagan, who was to turn 79 on March 4, was attending team practice at around 6 a.m. when he lost his balance along the docking area and hit his head during the fall.

He was rushed to the Manila Doctors Hospital and passed away at 3 a.m. yesterday probably due to hemorrhage. No medical report was available as of presstime.  

Ilagan’s remains lie in state at the Chapel of Nayong Silangan in Antipolo.

Marcia Cristobal, president of the PDBF, said they were all shocked by the incident because Ilagan, for his age, always remained in control.

“He’s such a big loss to the sport,” said Cristobal.

Ilagan was in charge of the team that won five gold medals in the 2011 International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships in Florida. Under his watch, the team also won six gold medals in the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games.

The PDBF, however, found itself in the middle of a controversy following its victory in Florida, and up to this day is fighting for its autonomy as an independent body.

The PDBF lost the recognition of the Philippine Olympic Committee as it refused to be placed under the wings of the Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation.

Cristobal said the International Olympic Committee will soon announce its decision regarding the PDBF’s battle for autonomy, and their members are hoping it would be in their favor.

“It’s too bad he’s (Ilagan) no longer here to see that day,” said Cristobal.
