MANILA, Philippines - There are those who are still hoping that the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will happen before it really gets too late.
Mayweather, still undefeated in 43 fights, is turning 36 this month while Pacquiao, who just lost two in a row, is not too far behind at 34.
They should have fought a couple of years back when they were younger, stronger and faster, when the whole world wanted them to fight.
If they come to terms now, they can fight next year, but it may no longer be dubbed a superfight as it would have been before.
Both camps have already agreed to random drug-testing, but have yet to agree on the purse sharing. This time, they should.
Otherwise, it gets too late in the day, and no one would care to watch even if they fight inside a makeshift ring on a Vegas intersection.
“The Pacquiao fight has to happen with Floyd,†Mayweather’s uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather, said recently.
He told www.boxingscene.com that despite Pacquiao’s recent defeats, people will still want to see the fight.
The elder Mayweather said it doesn’t matter if Pacquiao was knocked out cold by Juan Manuel Marquez last Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand.
“People want to see it. People don’t care whether he got knocked out. Floyd will knock him out and that’s the fight they want to see.â€
Pacquiao wants to fight in April and then get ready for a rematch with Marquez in September. Mayweather wants to fight in May.
Floyd has said many times before he will beat Pacquiao but still the flamboyant boxer couldn’t find a way to make it happen.
He wants a bigger share of the purse while Pacquiao wants it even at 50/50. A 45/45 sharing has been offered with the winner getting the remaining 10 percent of the pot.
It was reported yesterday that Mayweather is broke, but it’s hard to believe if you see the boxer flaunting his wealth on the Internet.
Mayweather and Pacquiao need the money. They’ve been offered tons of it, with Mayweather reportedly turning down $100 million for himself.
It would be foolish for him to still say no if ever a similar offer comes along
It’s late in the day. It’s either they do it or they don’t.
