MANILA, Philippines - Over 14,000 runners try their mettle Sunday in the Condura Skyway Marathon on a route that leads to the top of the Skyway from Filinvest City in Alabang, with staggered starting times from 12 midnight to 7 a.m. for the 42K, 21K, 10K, 6K and 3.8K run
The 42K marathon will start 12 midnight then followed by 21K run to start at 3:30 a.m., 10K run at 5 a.m., the 6K run at 6 a.m. and 3.8K run at 7:10 a.m.
A total of P280,000 cash prizes awaits the top three male and female overall finishers and the top three male and female Filipino finishers.
According to Ton Concepcion, founder and chief organizing officer of the Condura Skyway Marathon, the first three overall finishers and first three Filipino finishers of the 42K marathon will receive P25,000, P15,000, P10,000, respectively, male and female plus trophies, Asics running shoes and Soleus watches.
In the 21K run, the first three overall finishers and first three Filipino finishers will receive P10,000, P6,000 and P4,000, respectively plus trophy, Asics running shoes and Soleus watches.
Top three finishers of the 10K, 6K and the 3.8K run will receive plaques.
All finishers will be awarded medals, and finishers of the 42K run will receive an exclusive “I Conquered the Skyway†finishers shirt.
Last year, close to 13,000 runners participated, with Chirchir Jackson topping the 42K run male category, in 2:33:31. The women’s 42K winner was Irine Kipchumba in 3:16:13.
Winners in the All Filipino category were Carlito Fantilaga (2:46:12) and Cindy Lorenzo (3:20:09).
This year’s edition is for the rehabilitation and reforestation of the mangrove forest in Zamboanga de Sibugay.
Of the runners’ registration fees, P50 will go to the mangroves fund managed by the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation (PTFCF).
Runners to watch for on Sunday are Elmer Sabal, Carlito Fantilaga and Rene Desuyo in the 42K race category.
In the 21K, Nhea Ann Barcena, Meshele Villanueva, Kriska Domingo and Janet Agura are expected to battle it out for top honors.
Concepcion said the first ever and only event to date to be run on the Skyway, has attracted close to 58,000 runners in its six years of staging.
Skyway, Asics, Filinvest City and 100 Plus are the event’s presentors. Major backers are Summit Water, San Miguel Foods, LBC, Soleus, Unilever, Century Tuna, Dole, Akari, Selecta and Pioneer Insurance.
