Mikee propels team in Polo Cup

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The First Royale Salute President’s Polo Cup proved to be a memorable one for the White Team, especially for businessman-sportsman Mikee Romero.

Showing awesome control and upper body strength, Romero scored a game-high four goals to help power White to a thrilling 9-7 win over the Blue Team before a big Sunday crowd at the Alabang Country Club.

It was the most impressive performance by Romero since helping Globalport Polo team dominate the United States Polo Associations (USPA) Championship Cups in St. Louis, Missouri and Chicago last year and the recent Past Presidents Cup at the Manila Polo Club.

It likewise confirmed Romero’s new-found status as one of the hottest polo players in the country. His goal in the last 10 seconds earned his team a 3-2 win in the MPC event.

Though he led in scoring, Romero refused to take all the credit citing the valuable inputs and gallant maneuverings of teammates like Fil-Am pro player Anthony Garcia and known Hollywood producer Lope Juban Jr.

Garcia and Juban were equally brilliant, knocking in two goals each in the high goal tournament.

British player Jake Gordon was the fourth member of the White team which repulsed several late comebacks of the Antonio Veloso-led Blue Team in the tournament that gathered so many VIPs.

Argentinian banker Patrick Furlong played remarkably for the Blue team as he finished with three goals. Adrian Garcia and Santiago Juban were the other members of the Blue team.
