MANILA, Philippines - Reigning six-time men’s champion Far Eastern University and defending two-time titlist La Salle posted big wins in their respective divisions after the first two rounds in the UAAP Season 75 chess tournament at the FEU Auditorium over the weekend.
The Tams defeated UP, 3-1, and then routed National U, 3.5-0.5, to kick off their drive for the seventh crown in the men’s division while the Lady Archers came through with identical 3.5-0.5 victories over Ateneo and NU.
FEU’s 6.5 points thus put the Tams in the early lead, two points ahead of joint second placers UST, La Salle and Adamson, which tote 4.5 points apiece.
After a 3-1 victory over the Archers in the opening round, the Growling Tigers dropped a 1.5-2.5 decision to the Falcons.
La Salle rebounded from the Round 1 setback with a 3.5-0.5 thumping of University of the East. Prior to its win against UST, Adamson settled to a 2-2 draw with UE in the opening round.
With seven points, the Lady Archers are up by half a point over the Lady Maroons, who have 6.5 points.
The Diliman lady chessers routed the Lady Tamaraws, 3.5-0.5 and the Lady Falcons, 3-1.
The Lady Bulldogs, who scored a 4-0 shutout win over the Tigresses in the opener, are in third with 4.5 points.
