BSU seals 16th SCUAA regional meet

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Bulacan State University kept its winning tradition in the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association Region III (SCUAA-III) Olympics, ruling the meet for the 16th straight year with a haul of 121 gold medals in five days of sporting hostilities at the Zambales Sports Complex in Iba, Zambales.

The BulSU Gold Gears emerged as runaway winners with Central Luzon State University coming in second with 46 golds, followed by Bataan Peninsula State College with 27.

Twelve state colleges and universities in Central Luzon competed in the event hosted by Ramon Magsaysay Technological University.

Dr. Danilo Hilario, the BulSU vice president for external affairs, research and extension, said the school’s athletic program under College of Physical Education and Recreation dean Raquel Mendoza was a big key.

“We can’t deny the fact that our athletes’ performance was greatly enhanced by our yearlong training program,” said Hilario.

The Gold Gears struck hard on individual events as they placed only third in men’s basketball, second in women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s softball.

Also among the highlights of the Gold Gears’ overall championship was their six-game sweep in football.

Bulacan State U shut out Tarlac State U, 5-0, in the finals to take the fifth straight SCUAA-III football trophy.

The other school participants were Aurora State College of Technology, Bulacan Agriculture State College, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Pampanga College of Agriculture, Tarlac College of Agriculture, Don Honorio Ventura Technological State U, Ramon Magsaysay Technological U, Philippine Merchant Marine Academy and the Philippine State College of Aeronautics.
