Team UAAP ends up seventh in ASEAN meet

MANILA, Philippines - Team UAAP-Philippines fell short of its bid to equal its five-gold medal haul two years ago after settling with three silver medals at the close of the 16th ASEAN University Games in Vientiane, Laos Wednesday.

La Salle’s ace tanker Johansen Aguilar failed to defend his 200m backstroke title as the reigning UAAP Athlete of the Year settled for second in 2:09.09.

Glenn Victor Sutanto of Indonesia took the gold in 2:08.36.

University of the Philippines standout Claire Adorna also finished second in the women’s 200m backstroke, clocking 2:27.01.

Indonesian Patricia Yosita Hapsari took the gold in 2:24.63.

Ateneo judoka Angelo Gabriel Gumila accounted for the other silver in the Over 81 kg. category.

With a two-gold, 12-silver and 16-bronze haul, the Phl student-athletes finished seventh overall in the biennial meet organized by the Asean University Sports Council. 

Team UAAP-Philippines wound up fifth with five golds, four silvers, 24 bronzes two years ago in Chang Mai, Thailand.

Taekwondo jins Christian Al dela Cruz and Ernest John Mendoza of University of Santo Tomas delivered the twin golds for Team UAAP-Phl.

Aguilar and Adorna won two silvers and two bronze medals each as the UAAP tankers collected a total of five silvers and six bronzes.

Ateneo’s Celina Gonzalez won a bronze medal in the women’s 100m fly in 1:08.24, while his schoolmate, judoka Matthew Simon Jao also took a bronze in the over 90 kg up to 100 kg.
