24 PSL records fall in Bohol swim meet

MANILA, Philippines - Twenty-four Philippine Swim League meet records were erased at the close of the University of Bohol Swimming Championship, 35th PSL Leg Series, held over the weekend in Tagbilaran.

Vince Mikko Dimaano of Mindoro clocked 31.71 seconds in the 50m backstroke, breaking the old meet record of 32.70. He also won in the 200m IM in 2:30.32, 100m backstroke in 1:09.71 and 50m breaststroke in 37.22.

Dimaano also hit the Quadruple A mark of the American Motivational Time Standard.

Bhay Newberry, 9, of the Australia-Bosay team, won seven gold medals in her events – 200m IM, 100m and 50m freestyle, 100m and 50m butterfly and 100m and 50m backstroke.

Franchesca Joves of Diliman Preparatory School clocked 35.42, bettering the old mark of 35.98 in the 50m backstroke.

Rian Marco Tirol’s time of 35.30 in the backstroke exceeded the AAA standard.

BF Homes School’s Mark Bryan Dula, at 5 years the youngest participant, obliterated the old mark in the 50m backstroke in 1:02.03.

Ibalong Magayon’s 14-year-old John Paul de Leoz won the 50m freestyle in 26.95 and the 100m freestyle in 1:00.06.

The most out-standing swimmers were (boys) Gabriel Labasan (6-under), John Sitoy (7-8), Drych Ecleo (9-10), Rian Marco Tirol (11-12), Dimaano (13-14), Shalom Juliano Sabino (15-17), Ronel Tandayag (18 and over) and (girls) Micah Lora Amoguis (6-under), Isis Arnaldo (7-8), Newberry (9-10), Louise Jamielene Saavedra (11-12), Trisha Anne Oliveros (13-14) and Mary Angelic Saavedra (15-17).

University of Bohol was the runaway team over-all champion with 1,109 points, followed by Diliman Preparatory School (553) and the Ibalong Magayon Aquagliders Swim Club of Legazpi (508).

The meet ended with a swim fun participated in by team coaches and technical officials, showing off their prowess to the swimmers and parents.

“It was a fun and very competitive swim meet and we are proud of producing PSL swimmers who continuously improve their time in every competition. I’m happy the PSL reached new plateaus in its grassroots development program in 2012,” said PSL president Susan Papa.
