The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Colegio San Agustin outplayed King’s Montessori School, 25-12, 25-18, to log its second straight victory and wrest the early lead in the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League NCR leg at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum last Saturday.

Samantha Torre and Ana Gopico fired six kills each and wound up with a combined 24-point production for CSA, which fought back from an opening set setback to frustrate Angelicum College, 19-25, 26-24, 25-14, in the opener of the 10-team, two-group league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

Pasay City West High School held off St. James Academy-Malabon 25-15, 25-21, in Pool B.

MGC New Life Christian Academy, meanwhile, kicked off its campaign in Pool A with a scrambling 25-18, 25-21 victory over Academy of God’s Children with Kimmie Lao, Teri Cua and Josette Lee pooling 21 hits, including six attacks.

Miriam College also bounced back from an opening day loss to defending champion Hope Christian High School with a 25-14, 25-20 win over Gen. Pio del Pilar National HS to tie its victim at 1-1 in Pool A.

Isabella Romero, Ana Gomez, Frances Saclot and Elaine Ebreo combined for 15 kills of Miriam’s 27 points as MIC dominated the opening set before thwarting Pio del Pilar’s fightback in the second.

The  tournament, sanctioned by the Philippine Volleyball Federation, is sponsored by Toby’s Sports, Mikasa as official ball, Tunes Hotel as official residence of the Tournament of Champions, Asics and Volley Prep.
