Capadocia, partner reach Phinma final

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Top seed Marian Capadocia and Miki Kobayashi overwhelmed Anna Grigoryan and Miyo Kobayashi of Japan, 6-1, 6-1, yesterday to arrange a showdown with Nozomi Ohya and Yukina Saigo of Japan for the girls’ doubles crown in the Phinma International Juniors (Week Two) Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Capadocia, out to atone for her first round exit in the singles after claiming the crown last week, and Kobayashi dominated Grigoryan and Kobayashi all throughout to fashion out the one-sided win but could be in for a tougher outing against the Ohya-Saigo tandem, which upended second seed T. Momkoonthod and Chanikarn Silakul of Thailand, 6-2, 5-7(12-10), in the other semis match.

Unseeded Yuki Takamura and Taiwan’s Wu Tung lin, meanwhile, copped the boys’ doubles crown by upsetting No. 2 Sora Fukuda and Yusuke Takahashi of Japan, 6-4, 4-6(10-8), in the event sponsored by Phinma and backed by Technifibre, Viva mineral water and Powerade with the Philippine Sports Commission providing free use of the RMTC.

Meanwhile, action in the singles resumes at 9 a.m. today with Malaysian Abdul Razak facing off Takahashi, who ended Alberto Lim’s sweep bid Thursday, and Fukuda tangling with Shoma Kato in the boys’ semis.

Gabriella Umoquit of the US, whom Capadocia defeated in last week’s finale, goes for another title crack against Ohya while Saigo and India’s Pranjala Yadlapalli dispute the other championship berth.

The girls doubles finals is set at 11 a.m., also today.
