Phl duo tops 36K kayak marathon

MANILA, Philippines - Harold Madrigal and Rendell Magimanlak dominated their local rivals to rule the 36K kayak marathon, the highlight of the third Zambales MultiSports Festival that started from Candelaria and ended at Uacon Lake.

Madrigal and Magimanlak led from start to finish in 4:47.30, beating local entries Melchor Adnalan and Zaldy Canonigo, both natives of Uaco, who clocked 4:56.48 while another local tandem, Demi Exio and Morly Exio, came in third in 4:59.48.

“We are happy with the results of this three-day festival, a major component of our sports tourism program here in Zambales,” said Gov. Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. “We look forward to an even bigger kayaking event next year.”

Ebdane awarded the prizes to the winners, including a tandem kayak to the champion team.

The event is the second leg of this year’s Philippine Kayaking Series, the country’s longest-running kayaking series since 1997 and supported by the Uacon Cove Resorts and Residents’ Association (UCCRA) and the LGU of Masinloc, Candelaria, and Botolan.

In the 18K Tri Plus 1 race, featuring kayaking, open water swimming, trail biking, and a beach run, Rene Quijanol, Donnel Wayne Sanchez, Roger Anjo and Melanie Reyes Manor clocked 1:26.39 to claim the crown, beating the team of Lawrence Mendoza, Ronnie Rosete, Randolph Ferranza, and Mary Ann de Guia.

Sherwin Elamparo and Roger Elayda from Uacon, topped the 3K kayak novice race in 7.17, while Bernard Supetran and son G.B took the runner-up honors, beating car drifting champion Alex Perez and partner Ling Perez.
