Alas takes one year sabbatical after leaving Letran
MANILA, Philippines - Outgoing Letran coach Louie Alas yesterday said he would not entertain offers from any school for one year out of respect to the school he handled for more than a decade.
“I will not accept any offers of a head coaching job from any college for one year in case there would be offers,” said Alas after Letran rector and NCAA president Fr. Tamerlane Lana, OP, approved his resignation by the end of the year.
“It’s a self-imposed one-year sabbatical,” he added.
There were, however, reports that Ateneo is interested in his services.
Alas was actually one of the few names being mentioned to take over from Ateneo, the other two being Alex Compton, a fellow assistant coach at Alaska Milk, and current Adamson mentor Leo Austria.
“Not this year because it will be disrespectful to Letran if I entertain offers from other college schools,” said Alas. “Next season and after the playing years of my sons Kristoffer and Kevin expire, maybe I’ll start entertaining offers.”
The 49-year-old Alas said he would no longer ask for an extension.
