The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas-Metroil and Emilio Aguinaldo College turned back their respective rivals to join Far Eastern University in the semifinal round of the 2012 IPPCA Football Pre-Season Cup at the Nuvali Field in Sta. Rosa, Laguna last Sunday.

UST, last season’s runner-up in the UAAP, sailed past defending NCAA titlist San Beda, 4-1, to secure the top spot in Group C with nine points on three straight victories, while EAC ousted Philippine Christian University-Cavite, 3-1, to top Group B and likewise advance to the Final Four of the tournament organized by Filoil Flying V Sports and sponsored by Meralco, Nuvali, Nature’s Spring, Molten, N20 Gastropub, Boysen Paints, BDO, Topcoms/StarSports Korea, Bacchus, CDO San Marino Corned Tuna and Pingping Lechon.

The Tigers and the Generals thus joined the Tamaraws in the next round. FEU took the first semis spot on three straight wins for nine points to rule Group A.

In Group B, Ateneo blanked College of St. Benilde, 2-0, to boost its bid for the remaining slot although it must hope that De La Salle-Flying V loses to University of Perpetual Help System Dalta tomorrow to automatically advance.

The Green Archers, on the other hand, will advance with a victory over the Altas by at least eight goals, since the Blue Eagles hold the tiebreaker with a seven-goal difference.
