MANILA, Philippines - Aries Dimaunahan buried a triple in closing seconds as Mighty Sports edged Gerry’s Grill, 86-84, to gain an outright semifinal berth in the Danny Espiritu Cup at the Rizal Technological University gym in Mandaluyong recently.
The Mighty Sports cagers trailed majority of the way before Dimaunahan combined with former PBA star Marlou Aquino, Berson Franco and Jan Colina in the final period to turn back Gerry’s Grill’s bid and notch their fifth straight win in the tournament honoring the popular basketball handler.
Franco topscored with 18 points while the 6-foot-9 Aquino finished in double-double with 11 markers and 13 boards.
Colina added 10 markers, most of them in the first half as Mighty overhauled a 13-2 deficit early in the first quarter.
Mighty Sports, one of the most successful teams in the commercial league, also beat Gerry’s Grill in the finals of the Mandaluyong Cup last month.
