Akos, Meijer top wakeboard worlds

MANILA, Philippines - Hegedus Akos of Hungary dominated the boys’ division while Sanne Meijer of the Netherlands reigned in the girls’ side of the World Cable Wakeboard Championships 2012 at the Deca Clark Wakeboard Park in Angeles City, Pampanga yesterday.

Akos, the reigning European boys champ, piled up 64.67 points in Run1 and went on to beat Great Britain’s Harry Eames, who had 57.67 while another Briton Ryan Peacock came in third with 55.00.

The 15-year-old Akos finished second to Eames in the semis but saved his best for last to notch the victory in the event which gathered the leading riders and rising stars from 32 countries.

Two-time Euro champ Meijer, on the other hand, outclassed the field in their side of the event, amassing 74.33 points in Run1 and finishing with a whopping 90-point output in the next.

Vanessa Weinhauer of Germany placed second with 66 points while Lottie Harbottle of Great Britain had 60.33 points to claim third place in the event backed by Rixen Cableways, IWWF Wakeboard 2020 Vision, Smart, Gatorade, Deca Homes, Stoked Inc, RipCurl, Monster Energy Drink, Devant LED TV, Bacardi, Department of Tourism Region 3, Aktion Parks, Plus Event Marketing and organized by Eventking Corp. in cooperation with WWAP.

The event also features the men’s and women’s competitions in the Open, veterans and masters categories as well as the highly technical Wake Skate discipline.

On tap for today are the LCQ WS junior men, LCQ WB junior ladies, Qualification WB Open Men Qualification WS Open Ladies, Qualification WS Open Men while LCQ WS Open Ladies, LCQ WB Open Ladies, LCQ WB Open Men semifinals WB Junior Men will be held tomorrow.
