Icons, Lady Patriots reign in Sandugo-CAL

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Informatics International College and De La Salle University-Dasmariñas scored victories in contrasting fashions to rule their respective divisions in the Sandugo-Collegiate Athletic League at the Treston gym at the Bonifacio Global City last Sunday.

The Icons rode on a big fourth quarter run to subdue the Trinity University of Asia side, 70-57, and cop the men’s crown while the Lady Patriots pulled off a thrilling 61-60 overtime victory over the St. Benilde Lady Blazers to nail the ladies diadem.

Mythical five member Katherine Mangahas made a split with two minutes left as the Lady Patriots fought back from a 39-45 third quarter deficit to force overtime at 53. League and finals’ game MVP Diane Gelisan then teamed up with Mangahas in the extra period with the latter providing the winning jumper with nine seconds left in the contest.

The Lady Blazers had one last chance to turn the game around but Jennifer Mayol, who earlier scored on a three-point play that made it 60-59 for St. Benilde, flubbed on her try.

Gelisan topscored for DLSU-D with 20 points while Mangahas contributed 18 markers. Mayol led CSB with 16 but failed to draw solid support from Mythical Five member Grace Dadal, who struggled for eight points.

Gelisan, Mangahas, and Dadal were joined in the Mythical Five by Adamson University’s Janine Garrido and DLSU-D’s Allalaine de Gomas.
