Guarte, Carmen reign in PSC run
MANILA, Philippines - National team and San Sebastian mainstay Mervin Guarte and Far Eastern U standout Dalyn Carmen topped their respective divisions to lead the winners in the 10km races in the Philippine Sports Commission Run for Peace that started and ended at the Quirino Grandstand yesterday.
Guarte, a SEA Games silver medalist, timed 32 minutes, 14 seconds to edge Jumar Sarmiento and Rafael Poliquit, who finished second and third places in 32.27 and 32.39, respectively.
Carmen, for her part, dominated the distaff side in 38.43, beating Mary Ann Dela Cruz and national triathlon team standout Kim Mangrobang, who clocked 41.03 and 41.53, respectively.
About 4,500 runners from various sectors, including government agencies, took part in the event put up by the PSC in observance of the National Peace Consciousness Month.
PSC chair Richie Garcia and executive director Atty. Guillermo Iroy, Jr. awarded the prizes, which included P10,000, P5,000 and P3,000 to the top three placers in the 10K event, P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000 in 5K and P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 in 3K.
Army’s Alvin Canada (34.16), Peter Cominical (37.03) and Gonzalo Javier Jr. (38.40) topped the government category while another Army bet Hazel Madamba (49.15), Rowena Fernando (56.16) and Karina Salvador (57.45) took the top three places in the women’s side.
Michael Abanador ruled the men’s 5K in 16.56 followed by Patrick Gongob (16.55) and Erick John Castro (17.01) while Macrose Dichoso clocked 20:47.06 to beat Josephine Mendoza (21:09.03) and Janeth Lomidao (21:55.44) in the women’s 5K run
