Mighty Sports bags Gonzales cage title

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Mighty Sports thwarted Gerry’s Grill and hacked out a 70-63 victory to capture the Mandaluyong Cong. Neptali Gonzales Cup at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong last Sunday.

Former PBA player Gerard Francisco completed a three-point play down the stretch to seal the victory for the Pat Aquino-mentored Mighty Sports.

It was Mighty Sports’ second championship in the commercial league after topping the Inter-City tournament in San Juan last year.

“This is the first championship for Mighty Sports after a long absence in the commercial league. We worked so hard to win this one,” said Mighty Sports president Dr. John Sy.

With former PBA MVP Kenneth Duremdes leading the attack, Mighty Sports, which lost to Gerry’s Grill at the end of the elims, took control of the game, leading as many as 13 points in the second quarter.

Duremdes and Jeff Sanders led the Mike Fermin-managed Mighty Sports with 13 points apiece while Luis Palaganas bagged the tournament’s MVP honors. They advanced to the finals by beating Nougat Candy, 80-78.

Other members of the team were Angelo Wongchuking, Bernson Franco, Wowie Evangelista, Marvin Sioco, Chase Tan, Donal Ong, Edric Ferrer, VJ Serios, Arnold Gamboa and Sammy Young.
