Boyzie replaces Jerry as UE coach

MANILA, Philippines - In a move management claimed was part of “appropriate measures to strengthen the performance of all UE Red Warriors teams in various UAAP and other sports tournaments,” University of the East yesterday made a personnel change in its coaching staff.

The Red Warriors, who wound up eighth after the first round with a 1-6 record, relegated coach Jerry Codiñera to a backroom job while giving Boyzie Zamar back his old chore as head coach on an interim basis.

“Yes, I am now appointed sports consultant for UE,” said Codiñera, who took over the helm in Season 74, leading UE to a 3-11 record and seventh place in his first year.

“I’m still very much involved with UE Sports Program but in different capacity. More on back office,” he added.

UE said Codiñera’s vast experience in the sporting arena “would surely be beneficial in the broader, more time-requiring responsibility of attending to UE’s entire sports program – a program that covers over 30 sporting squads, aside from our basketball teams.”

Zamar, a teammate of Codiñera in the mid-1980s, will be back on the helm after coaching the James Yap and Paul Artadi-led Warriors in Seasons 64-66.

“Coach Zamar will now steer the all-Filipino UE Red Warriors-Men’s Basketball Team, as the squad faces its opponents anew for the second round — starting with this Saturday’s game against La Salle. “Coach Codiñera, as UE Sports Consultant, is expected to remain on hand to provide inspiration and support to the UE Red Warriors,” UE said.
