MANILA, Philippines - Talk n Text faces Barako Bull while Meralco collides with Air21 tonight in a pair of must-win games for four teams trying to stay in the race in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Bolts and the Express fight for survival at 5:15 p.m. opener before the Tropang Texters and the Energy battle at 7:30 p.m.
“We must figure out not only how to stop the prolific Leroy Hickerson but their deep and talented local crew as well. The problem is we’re not playing anywhere near the level to compete versus the top team as seen in our last few games,” said Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes.
“We have to be consistent to beat Talk n Text. TnT is an offense-oriented team, thus, consistency on defense is essential,” said Barako coach Junel Baculi.
It’s a must-win game for both teams mired in the lower half of the standings.
Barako is at 3-3 while Talk n Text totes a 2-3 mark, both needing a surge in the closing stage of the elimination round to make the semifinals with a competitive carry-over win-loss card.
Rain or Shine and B-Meg are two teams that are now safe in the semis. The Elasto Painters have built much advantage over their rivals with a remarkable 6-1 record.
Meralco and Air21 have been left way behind at 2-4 and 1-4, respectively.
“There is still a small opening for us, and we want to make sure that we grab that opportunity,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.
“The signs are still encouraging despite our loss to Rain or Shine. We were still up by one inside the last minute but just couldn’t close out the game. Against Air21, we must play intelligent basketball,” Gregorio also said.
Rain or Shine shackled down Meralco import Mario West in the final quarter and knocked in important charities at endgame as the Elasto Painters beat out the Bolts, 81-77, in a tough defensive battle.
Air21 has definitely been performing worse despite a consistent productive performance from Zach Graham – the tournament scoring leader.
The Express are in danger of missing the post-elims play for the sixth straight conference.
