Huey, pal barge into semifinals
MANILA, Philippines - Fil-Am Treat Huey and American Scott Lipsky stunned second seed Frantisek Cermak of the Czech Republic and Julian Knowle of Austria, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6, to barge into the semifinals of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany the other day.
The stunning upset set Huey and Lipsky for a possible confrontation with newly crowned seven-time French Open singles champion Rafael Nadal of Spain and partner fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers.
Nadal and Granollers, who are seeded fourth in the tournament serving as a tune-up for the Wimbledon, are playing unseeded Germans Michael Kohlmann and Florian Mayer at presstime.
Huey is hoping to gain points with a solid showing in the weeklong tournament after moving to No. 39 in the world doubles rankings this week.
Top seed Aisam Ul Haq Qureshi of Pakistan and Jean Julien Rojer of the Netherlands edged Sweden’s Johan Brunstorm and Germany’s Philippe Marx in a pulsating 7-6 (7), 6-7 (1), 10-7 decision to advance to the semis.
Qureshi, part of the tandem that beat Huey and another partner in the French Open doubles, and Rojer will take on Poland’s Lukasz Kubot and Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny, who trounced Canada’s Milos Raonic and Adil Shamasdin, 6-3, 7-5, for the other finals berth.
