Nolte shares lead in national open chess
MANILA, Philippines – IM Rolando Nolte subdued Fide Master Paolo Bersamina to join the leaders in the early going of the National Open Chess Championships at the Philippine Sports Commission canteen in Vito Cruz, Manila.
It was Nolte’s second straight win as he matched IMs Richilieu Salcedo, Oliver Dimakiling and Emmanuel Senador, and FMs Roderick Nava, Haridas Pascua, Adrian Ros Pacis, Deniel Causo, Alex Milagrosa, Alcon John Datu, Ben Polao and Rhobel Legaspi’s big start.
Salcedo outwitted Jefferson Mansanero, Dimakiling routed John Ranel Morazo, Senador nipped Gabriel Paril, Nava outclassed Ritchie Evangelista, Pascua downed Leodegario Ricana, Pacis beat NM Stewardt Manaog, Causo beat Kevin Mirano, Milagrosa defeated Rey Jomar Magallanes, Datu crushed Jerad Docena and Legaspi smashed Paul Robert Evangelista.
In women’s play, Mary Grace Tambasen waylaid Akiko Charmaine Suede to join Shanie Mae Mendoza and Jean Karen Enriquez in the lead with two points.
According to the organizing National Chess Federation of the Philippines secretary-general Bambol Tolentino, a total of 14 players, six men and eight women, will advance to the grand finals to join the 12 seed grandmasters and six top woman players from last year’s national championship.
The event serves as the qualifier for the national team vying in the World Chess Olympiad in Turkey in August.
