Lions roar to 7th straight win, enter Filoil quarters
MANILA, Philippines - San Beda went on an early scoring binge as it thrashed University of Perpetual Help, 74-55, for its seventh straight win and a berth in the quarterfinals of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.
Nigerian Ola Adeogun played limited minutes but made significant contributions – 10 points and 10 rebounds – while Julius Armon topscored with 20 points for the Red Lions, who set the tone for the rout after the first quarter, 26-7.
Adeogun left early in the third quarter to catch a flight for a training trip with the whole San Beda team to Las Vegas late last night.
“He (Ola) had to leave early to catch a flight to the US. They’re scheduled to fly tonight (last night) and I will be joining them the next day,” said San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc.
Armon, hoping to suit up for the team in the NCAA this year, also had five rebounds and four assists.
Earl Thompson fired 14 points for the Altas, who just didn’t have enough firepower to match up with the Lions. Perpetual fell to 0-3.
“Defensively we are getting better, offensively, we will try to get better,” said coach Ronnie Magsanoc, as his team choked the Altas with their stifling defense.
Adamson picked up its second win in three games as it turned back Emilio Aguinaldo College, 77-59, in the second game.
“I challenged my players in the second half, I told them that we were not the team we used to be,” said Adamson coach Leo Austria.
Nuyles fired 17 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Eric Camson finished with a double-double output of 10 points and 11 rebounds and Roider Cabrera added 11 markers.
Noube Happi also made a double-double job with 15 points and 21 rebounds, while Igee King added 11 points and five rebounds for EAC, which dropped to 1-3. – With report from Roland Quilente
