Goma as PSC commissioner?

MANILA, Philippines - Consider actor-sportsman Richard Gomez as among the candidates for the vacant post at the Philippine Sports Commission.

A PSC insider yesterday said the 46-year-old Gomez, who served as Presidential adviser on sports under the Estrada administration, is in the mix.

Gomez is a gifted athlete who has represented the country in various international competitions. As a fencer, he won a gold medal in the 2005 Manila SEA Games. 

The former heartthrob is or was also into shooting, archery, basketball, golf, karting and rowing.

PSC chairman Richie Garcia did not confirm nor deny the inclusion of Gomez’ name in the list of candidates to replace Chito Loyzaga who recently resigned as commissioner.

Others in the list are ex-PSC board members Cynthia Carrion and Ely Bontigao, soft tennis chief Jeff Tamayo and muaythai head Lucas Managuelod.

Garcia yesterday said he hoped the replacement is named soon.

“We’re just waiting. But we need the replacement because there’s work to be done. Maybe President Aquino is in the process of reviewing the list, looking for the perfect replacement,” said Garcia.

“Hopefully by this month the President can make the appointment,” he added.
