San Beda, NU out to extend win streaks

MANILA, Philippines – San Beda and National University take on separate rivals today, seeking to stretch their win streaks in their respective divisions as action in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup resumes today at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Red Lions swept their first five games and are heavily favored to get past the Mapua Cardinals in the 3:30 p.m. match of another explosive triple-bill in the tournament presented by Bostik Phils. Inc. in cooperation with Total Phils. Corp.

Mapua totes a 0-1 card in Group A of the two-division tournament backed by major sponsors Vulcaseal, TMS Ship Agencies, Inc., Kia Motors, Bayo,  BDO, Nature’s Spring, Molten and Oxycan.

“We know every game poses a new challenge for us and Mapua has always been a tough team,” said San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, try to keep their win run going in Group B as they tangle with a resurgent Emilio Aguinaldo College side at 1:45 p.m.

The Bulldogs have won their last three games by wide margins, including a 99-84 rout of the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in the opener, likewise making them the favorites against the Generals.

But EAC is also coming off a big win, a 77-72 conquest of St. Benilde and an opening game setback to Jose Rizal U, 55-63.

Ateneo, meanwhile, hopes to stay within striking distance of the Lions as it clashes with University of the East at 5:15 p.m.

The Blue Eagles (4-1) also set out as the heavy favorites against the Warriors (1-1) with Greg Slaughter and Kiefer Ravena again expected to lead the attack.

“If you’ll notice, our total points scored each game is improving and we hope to continue to ride on that gradual rise,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga.

Bobby Parks has been averaging in double digits in NU’s last three games with Mark de Guzman, Jeoff Javillonar and big man Emmanuel Mbe providing the needed support.

The Generals hope to draw the best from Noube Happi, John Monteclaro and John Tayontong, who all posted double-digit scores in the win against the Blazers.
