Local, foreign triathletes vie in K-Swiss SUBIT

MANILA, Philippines - Close to 800 triathletes from around the country and abroad are expected to compete for honors and London Olympics qualifying points in the K-Swiss ITU Subic Bay International Triathlon (SUBIT) presented by Century Tuna May 5 and 6.

Now on its 19th year, the SUBIT, the nation’s longest running triathlon event, is organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and sanctioned by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC).

Depending on their categories, participants may race in the standard distance course of 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running (for elite, under-23 and age-groupers) or in the sprint distance (750m swim - 20K bike - 5K run for juniors and adults at least 20-years-old).

Also on tap is the mini-sprint distance course (350m swim - 9.8 K bike - 3K run) for participants aged 13-15.

At stake in the event sponsored by K-Swiss, Century Tuna, SBMA, Speedo, David’s Salon, SM Olongapo, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, Gatorade, Fitness First, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Standard Insurance is P300,000 in total cash prizes. Medals, gift certificates and premium items from event sponsors will also be given away for age-grouper, team relay and club category winners.

Deadline for registration is April 20. TRAP-registered athletes will get a 10 percent discount while students and senior citizens will get 20 percent off.

Part of the proceeds from the entry fees will go to the TRAP’s TriGIVING program which aims to support triathletes in the developmental pool.

The SUBIT will also implement environmental and conservation measures in accordance with the Green Triathlon initiative.
