Salgados, Frayna top Gov. Moreno chess

MANILA, Philippines - FEU’s Lennon Hart Salgados and WNM Janelle Mae Frayna of FEU-FERN topped their respective divisions to lead the winners in the 2012 Gov. Oscar Moreno National age group chess championships in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental last Tuesday.

Salgados defeated Jayben Ian Dalipe in the fifth round then split the point with Bhell Ortiz in the final round to finish with five points while Frayna beat Carol Anne Chua and Pamela Marie Chin in the last two rounds to complete her sweep of the girls’ side of the 20-and-under category.

McDominique Lagula scored 4.5 points to place second behind Salgados while WNM Jedara Docena, Nikki Erica Yngayo and Carol Anne Chua took the next three places in the girls’ side of the centerpiece event.

Meanwhile, Salgados and Frayna, members of the back-to-back UAAP juniors champion teams, will lead the country’s campaign in the 2012 ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships slated June 10-20 in Hue, Vietnam.

Other winners in the event hosted by Gov. Oscar Moreno and organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by chairman/president Butch Pichay were Austin Jacob Literatus (boys U-16), Daryl Unix Samantila (boys U-14), Romeo Canino (boys U-12), Ronald Canino (boys U-10) and Billy Samuel Ventanilla (boys U-8), Alyssa Ysaiah Jamaca (girls U-16), Ella Grace Moulic (girls U-14), Natori Biazza Diaz (girls U-12), Me Ann Joy Baclayon (girls U-10) and Methusellah Ramos (girls U-8).

The top five in each category will also earn berths in the grand finals on April 23-31 in Tanauan, Batangas where the winners will represent the country in the Asian Youth Chess championships set June 24-July 4 in Sri Lanka.
