ANC spikers clinch top post, face NU

-

MANILA, Philippines - Angelicum College survived MGC New Life Academy’s gutsy stand as it hacked out a tough 25-22, 28-26 decision to gain the top seeding in Pool B at the close of the Shakey’s Girls Volley League NCR Leg elims round at the Arellano gym in Legarda last weekend.

Carla Sandoval fired 16 points, including 10 kills and three blocks, while Melanie Torres and Ronjean Momo combined for 14 hits, including five attacks and three blocks, to carry the ANC tossers to victory in the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Metro Sports.

ANC will take on Pool A No. 2 National University in the crossover semifinals set March 11 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

“I told our girls that we needed to win in two to get the top seeding in Pool B. I guess the jitters got to them in the second set and I’m glad we pulled it off,” said Angelicum coach Kenneth Eugenio. “Meeting NU in the semis will be difficult but we will do our best.”

Pool A topnotcher Mighty Sports-Hope Christian School and Pool B No. 2 Colegio San Agustin tangle at 10 a.m. in the other semis duel of the event backed by Toby’s, Mikasa and Asics. The finals and the battle for third will be played in the afternoon.
