MANILA, Philippines - The UE Red Warriors fencing team dominated the Espada Under 23 Fencing Championships, winning nine of 12 titles at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City recently.
Aside from nine gold medals, the UE bets also took four silver medals and seven bronzes, bringing UE’s total medal count to 20.
UE bested Far Eastern University, Ateneo de Manila University, the University of the Philippines and Reedley International School.
In the boys’ epee event, Marlowe Nicole Osayan won the gold in the 13-16 years old division while Lee Eigran Ergina ruled the 17-23 years old division.
UE fencers Clark Vincent De Guzman (rank 6), Roger Randall Samia (rank 7), Ruvic John Delos Santos (rank 8) and Felipe Kimbert (rank 11) also competed in the 17-23 division.
UE women’s team member Elaine Kea Gonzales took home the gold medal in the girls’ epee event (17-23 division).
In the boys’ foil, 17-23 division, UE swept the top three spots with Francois Nowell Licono winning the gold medal. Michael Nicanor took the silver while Nathaniel Perez bagged the bronze.
Kenneth John Paraso (rank 10) also competed in the division.
Divine Romero also won the gold medal in the girls’ foil event, 13-16, while Clara Marian Senga took home the division’s bronze medal. Justine Gail Tinio, Wilhelmina Lozada and Keren Pangilinan also swept the 17-23 division.
In the boys’ sabre event, the UE bets likewise swept the top three spots with Bryan John Bon Santos taking the gold medal. Alvin Almonte took the silver and Bruce Kevin Ng and Gervacio Sandoval, who tied for rank 3, received a bronze medal each. Paul Talavera (rank 17) also competed.
Christian Jhester Concepcion won the silver medal in the 13-16 division.
Allaine Nicole Cortey won the gold medal in girls’ sabre, 13-16 division, while Kharyl Shoemaker settled for the bronze. Also in the division was Drew Alyssa Cesa Celso (rank 6). Jylyn Nicanor brought home the gold medal in the 17-23 division.
