FEU, La Salle keep chess titles

MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University extended its domination of men’s chess to a sixth straight year while De La Salle picked up its straight women’s title in UAAP Season 74 at the FEU Mini-Theater in Manila last Sunday.

FEU lost to University of the Philippines, 1-3, in 14th and final round but still wound up champion after University of Santo Tomas managed only a 2.5-1.5 victory over De La Salle.    

MVP Ritchelieu Salcedo and Antonio Chavez came away with crucial draws against Leo Daylo and Ywhen Lababo to secure the win for FEU.    

Former two-time MVP Sheider Nebato bowed to MC Nazario, while Lennon Hart Salgados lost to Willbert Pilarta.

The Tamaraws thus earned their 13th men’s title in the league by amassing 38.5 points, 2.5 points ahead of the Growling Tigers. The Fighting Maroons wound up third with 34.5 points.

De La Salle, on the other hand, clinched their third women’s crown by closing out Season 74 with a 3.5.-0.5 victory over Ateneo. The Lady Archers amassed 42 points.

UP placed second following a 4-0 shutout of National U for 31.5 points. The Lady Eagles fell to third with 30 points.

De La Salle’s Jan Jodlyn Fronda was named the women’s MVP.
