Sy bags gold in Asian bowl

-

MANILA, Philippines - Junior standout Alexis Sy snatched the Philippines’ lone gold medal in the 16th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championship recently at the International Bowling Center in Nasr City in Cairo, Egypt.

Sy, a former Philippine Open champion, tallied 247 and 246  for a leading total of 493 points in the girl’s stepladder masters event to snatch the gold against Korean Son Hye-Rin (389).

“I didn’t lose hope even there was only one day left in the tournament,” said Sy, 18, a member of the Philippine junior bowling team. “God, country and our parents made us inspired.”

The youth delegation was supported by Philippine Bowling Congress (PBC) Youth Committee Chair Alex Lim, PBC president Ernesto “Toti” Lopa, Cebuana Lhuillier, Mar Luwalhati, Atty. Bernard Hernandez and the Philippine Sports Commission.

“It was a remarkable feat. It only showed our young players have the capability to excel. They are very promising,” said Lim.

“I’m proud of the achievement of our youth team,” said Lopa, 79, the father of youth championship in Asia. “We are looking for more achievements this year.”

Sy moved into the stepladder finals with a total of 3694 on a higher second block score line of 1837 as opposed to 1737 in the first block.

The silver medalists were Kenneth Chua (boy’s masters), Janine Kuwahara (girls singles), Kenneth Chua and Enzo Hernandez (boys doubles) and the quartet of Sy, Kuwahara, Krizziah Tabora and Patricia Tajo (girl’s team).

Sy and Tajo settled for bronze in the girl’s doubles event.
