Gomez, last Phl bet, also falls
MANILA, Philippines - Roberto Gomez racked up back-to-back wins but bowed to Chris Melling of Great Britain, 4-9, in the quarterfinals, ending the Filipino bets campaign in the World 8-Ball Championship in Fujairah, UAE late Thursday.
Lee Vann Corteza and Carlo Biado also dropped their respective matches with the former losing to Fu Che Wei of Chinese-Taipei, 5-9, in the Last 16 stage after beating Nguyen Phuc Long of Vietnam, 9-4.
Meanwhile, Efren “Bata” Reyes vows to go all out against Ko Pin-yi of Taiwan as they collide in the Philippine Bigtime Billiards (PBB) Face Off Series tonight at Pagcor Airport Casino in Parañaque City.
Biado toppled Toru Kuribayashi of Japan, 9-1, in the Last 32 but was clobbered by Chang Jun Lin of Chinese-Taipei, 9-3.
Gomez, the 2007 World 9-Ball runner-up, held off Mark Gray of Great Britain, 9-6, in the Last 32 then subdued Yukio Akagariyama of Japan, 9-5, in the next round.
But he struggled against Melling, who seized control early en route to posting the runaway victory in the event ruled by Dennis Orcollo last year.
