-

MANILA, Philippines - Over 200 swimmers from 19 teams all over Mindanao and guest teams from Manila clash for honors in the Philippine Swimming League swim-for-a-cause meet which gets under way today in typhoon-hit Cagayan de Oro.

Gov. Oscar Moreno, who offered the free use of the Pelaez Swimming Center, has rolled the red carpet for the Mindanao and Manila swimmers who are led by former Sen. Nikki Coseteng, who is also fielding a crack team from her Diliman Preparatory School to compete for honors and distribute goods to victims of Typhoon Sendong.

“I am happy to see swimmers from Zamboanga, Dapitan, Davao City, Surigao province, Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro excited to compete,” said PSL president Susan Papa, who also thanked Rey Balandra, Alvin Benasa and Alicia Sayosay for promoting the sport of swimming in the region.

The Center for Community Transformation, a Laguna-based charitable institution and a partner organization of PSL in its outreach program for street children., has also sent swimmers to the first Mindanao meet.

Competitions will be in 6-under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-17, and 18-over categories for boys and girls.

The top three finishers will receive gold, silver and bronze medals, while the swimmers with the most number of points in each category will be awarded a trophy.

The PSL is also awarding a Challenge Trophy to the overall team champion and a certificate of participation to each competitor.
