Doves take Game one of title series

-

MANILA, Philippines - Twice beaten by Technological Institute of the Philippines in the elimination round, St. Francis of Assisi College demonstrated Monday what being a three-peat champion is all about.

The Doves, looking more like birds of prey than emblems of peace, shocked the Engineers, their unbeaten tormentors, 70-60, to take Game One of the fourth Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (UCLAA) Basketball Finals at the San Andres gym.

Game Two is today at 10:30 a.m. also at the San Andres gym, with St. Francis eyeing to extend its dynasty to a fourth straight season.

A winner-take-all Game Three is set Friday, if necessary.

“The heart of a champion is what beats inside St. Francis,” said UCLAA president Art Onas, who oversees the tournament along with vice president Ma. Angeles Prats and treasurer Jun Quinio.

Jason Melano and Joseph Paday combined for 34 points.
