NCR, Quezon, Davao fives take U-16 opener

BAGUIO, Philippines – Teams from the National Capital Region, Quezon Province and Davao came away with big victories to lead the opening day winners in the 2012 Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas National Under 16 Championship at the UB gym yesterday.

NCR’s St. Clare College, Quezon’s International School for Better Beginnings and Assumption College of Davao beat St. Agnes Academy of Albay, 77-51, Claret School of Zamboanga, 61-53, and JDV Sr. Memorial National High School of Dagupan, 70-54, respectively, in the event serving as the kickoff tournament for the nationwide grassroots development program of SBP under its president Manny V. Pangilinan, chairman of PLDT-Smart.

Cedric Hernandez fired 16 points for St. Clare, which took the half at 35-27, while ISBB drew 26 points from Mark Don Victor Alcala. Rotheil Aqujar and Faith Morales, on the other hand, scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, for Assumption in the girls division.
