Arellano spikers stay in race, edge Pirates

MANILA, Philippines - Arellano University outlasted guest team Lyceum, 25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, yesterday to stay in the hunt for one of the two remaining berths in the Final Four in the 87th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

The win improved the Lady Chiefs to 5-3, while the Lady Pirates dropped out of the race with a 4-4 card.

The Lady Chiefs, however, must beat unbeaten UPHSD on Friday to get into the next round.

The Lady Pirates, meanwhile, close out their campaign against the San Beda Lionesses, one of four teams still in contention for a spot in the semis.

In the other women’s match, College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers dumped the Mapua Lady Cardinals, 25-5, 25-8, 25-9, for their second win in eight games. The Cardinals dropped to 0-9.

In the men’s division, the Chiefs whipped the Pirates, 28-26, 25-22, 25-21, in straight sets for their seventh straight win, while the Junior Chiefs completed a sweep following a 25-14, 25-11, 25-19 victory over the Junior Pirates.
