Resma reigns in PSC netfest
MANILA, Philippines - Third seed Roxanne Resma capped her impressive campaign in the second PSC/Philta age group tennis championship as she toppled second seed Ma. Angela Sunga, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, to capture the girls’ Under-16 crown at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center yesterday.
Resma, who gained a crack at the crown with a walkover win over No. 1 Marian Capadocia in the rain-halted semifinal round, held her ground in the decider, coming up with clutch points to frustrate Sunga and claim the crown and 200 ranking points.
She also foiled Sunga’s bid for a double after the latter scored a 1-0 (ret.) victory over Capadocia in the final of the premier U-18 division of the week-long event sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission.
Top seed Erika Manduriao also hung tough in the third set to stop Ingrid Mariz Gonzales, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, and pocket the U-14 title in the ranking tournament backed by ATP Head as official ball through Dynamic Sports.
Fourth ranked Calvin Canlas likewise came away with a walkover victory over No. 3 Kyle Parpan in the final of the boys’ U-18 event while top seed Julian Dayrit stopped Mikio Shimomura’s giant-killing spree with a 6-3, 6-0 romp to bag the boys’ U-14 diadem.
Third seed Arthur Pantino, on the other hand, clipped Marcus del Rosario, 6-2, 6-0, to claim the boys’ U-12 plum.
The other winners were No. 1 Mico Eala (unisex 10-under) and second seed Francesca Angela Santiago (girls U-12).
